Despite being a recent release, Rockabye is the third song I ever wrote and produced. I recorded it on a USB mic.

It was created when I was in such a different headspace - I never thought about what it was going to become, or who would even listen to it.. Having no audience or any expectation of myself was liberating.

Playing the piano one day.. I wrote a slow waltzing chord progression. The next day… I wrote this faster paced funky one; and the day after? I thought, let’s smoosh them together - Rockabye was born.

I wrote Rockabye just as Covid struck. I had just moved out of home, and my roommate and I would smoke… every night. We were alone, and this was just the way we could escape.

I have some extremely conflicting feelings about this part of my life. On the one hand, it was a lot of fun, I grew really close to a certain friend. However, it was also an activity that grew into something more sinister.

Rockabye is a song about dependency, escapism, and dreams. It’s about the push and pull, the ritual, and choosing emptiness over silence.

It’s been a three-year-long gag, that with every social event, I skip it with the same excuse: “Sorry I'm working on Rockabye”. I have friends who’ve been begging me to release this song for three years, and I’m just glad I can finally appease that small, but persistent crowd.

This song is the moment before a decision is made, it’s the hallucination of a year.
